Our Horses

Picture
DANTE

Our first rescue horse came to us in the Spring of 2019.  Dante, A BLM mustang, was abandoned by his owner on their way out to the west coast.  Fortunately, our friends at Horse Haven Montana contacted us and Dante now has his forever home.

Our first horses from Devil’s Garden include Stormchaser and Rainmaker and came to live with us in the fall of 2019. Both horses have been sold to a US Veteran living in Wyoming. We are delighted that he is giving them both a home and that he will be using them as his therapy horses.

Montana Reins of Hope is working with the US Forest Service to bring some of these iconic wild horses to Missoula, Montana. In March 2020, fifteen Devil’s Garden mustangs came to live with us at Montana Reins of Hope, where we gentled and trained them. We believe that high-quality training helps to ensure that these horses will have a high-quality life in a forever home. We can make this world a better place for horses and humans through quality equine education programs that focus on building relationships with horses on the foundation of trust.

Be Part of the Solution

Every horse has their story  We will never know their full story before they come to live with us, but our first goal is to teach them to trust. These wild horses need time to adapt to being around humans, which is why our mantra is Slow is Fast. We care about the story that these horses have when they are with us and when they are in their forever homes, which is why we don't force them to do things that they are not mentally ready to do.  We give them time to learn to trust and learn to control their natural flight and fight instincts. Calm, confident, consistent...we want to ensure they are safe and that they have a sound and trusting mind for the rider.
Our Devil’s Garden Mustangs will be available to their forever homes after 90 days of training with Joe Misner and his students. We are asking owners to invest a relatively small amount in their horse and commit to this high quality training foundation.  Although each horse progresses differently, they are generally considered "started under saddle" after about 90 days of training.  They will have the basic foundation of catching, leading, loading, picking up all 4 feet, standing tied, ground driving, fence mounting, snaffle bit, riding in a round pen at walk, trot, lope, and ponying them around the ranch. If the horse is accepting, then we will ride them around the ranch.  The horses will be available to their forever homes at the cost of their training, board, farrier and vet fees (starting at $3,000). Included are complimentary lessons with Joe Misner for the owner.  We feel this is the best way to make the transition and to ensure that these trained horses have the best home possible.

For owners wanting extended training for their horse, options are available for the discounted rate of $750 per month for training and board.  Proceeds to offset the costs of training and boarding these horses allow us to train even more mustangs. You can help us continue to be part of the solution to saving these iconic horses—the American Mustang.

All horses are $3,500 unless otherwise noted.  Potential owners will be interviewed and must complete an application to be approved.
All of our horses that we received in March of 2020 have found their forever homes!  We are so excited that they all went to good homes.    In January of 2021, we received 2 more Devil's Garden mustangs from the 2019 gather:

Available Mares:
Jettee (#5768)- 11 year old bay, 14.3hh
